How to Make French Toast Sticks
Prep Time: 5 minutes | Cook Time: 10 minutes |
This recipe takes just a few minutes to transform the ingredients into a delicious dish that both adults and kids will love.
Let’s follow these steps:
Step 1: First, cut the bread into about 1 ½ inch pieces, being careful when using a sharp knife.
Step 2: Beat the eggs in a bowl until well blended. Add the cinnamon, milk, sugar and a pinch of salt, then mix everything together, whisking these ingredients together.
Step 3: Heat a non-stick pan over medium heat, add 1 tablespoon of butter and let it melt slightly to enhance the flavor of the dish. While the pan is heating, be careful not to burn yourself.
Step 4: Dip each piece of bread into the egg mixture, soaking for a few seconds on each side. Let excess water drain before placing in the baking tray to avoid soggy cake. Place as many breadsticks as you can fit in the baking sheet, about half of which will fit if you use a 12 inch skillet.
Step 5: Cook the breadsticks until golden on one side (I left mine for about 3 minutes), then flip and cook for another 2 minutes until the other side is golden. And you can take them out of the pan, be quick so the cake doesn’t burn.
Step 6: At this point, there is still butter left, so you put it all back in the pan and repeat the process for the remaining unbaked bread.
The moment has come, enjoy your delicious breakfast!
Notes on French Toast Sticks
I have some notes for you when making this dish:
- You can save a lot of time by preparing your dough at home, storing it in the fridge, and then just pulling it out and cooking when you need it. I often do this for camping breakfasts.
- Slice the bread thick enough, according to my experience, about 1 ½ inch thick is reasonable. This helps the bread absorb the spices more evenly, and when grilled, it will have the desired crispiness.
- You can freeze these French Toast Sticks for later use. But remember not to put them in the fridge immediately after cooking, let the bread cool down, put it in a sealed box and then put it in the freezer. When you need to use it, reheat it in the oven or use a baking pan to have crispy, delicious bread sticks.
- These breadsticks are great as a main course or a side dish for breakfast! Pair them with crustless spinach quiche, herb omelets, egg muffin cups or tater tots for a rich flavor. For a classic, pair them with eggs Benedict or huevos rancheros.
Skip the prepackaged French toast bars and try making your own at camp. The crunch, the flavor, and the joy of making it yourself will make this a breakfast you’ll remember.
