The amount I recommend will be enough for you to make 4 pizzas:
Pizza Dough
- 2 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 packet rapid rise yeast
- 2 teaspoons salt
- 1 cup warm water
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
Fillings
- ½ cup pizza sauce
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese, lightly shredded
- 1 green bell pepper, diced
- 4 oz can sliced black olives
- 16 slices pepperoni
- oil
Equipment
The necessary equipment is also quite easy to carry, not bulky but adds flavor to the Pie Iron Pizzas. What you need are the 3 equipment below:
- Pie Iron: We use a single square pie iron from Rome, but they also offer double square and round options.
- Silicone Brush: You’ll need this for greasing, like when you need to spread olive oil, marinades or sauces evenly and easily. This tool comes in handy when camping.
- Heat Resistant Gloves: They allow you to safely pick up hot cookware, adjust the grill, and even rearrange logs without worry.
How to Cook Pie Iron Pizzas
Prep Time: 30 minutes | Cook Time: 15 minutes |
Pie Iron Pizzas are great even in bad weather, even better when it’s rainy or cold. For this recipe, we made our own pizza dough, but you can easily use store-bought dough to make it even quicker and easier! Either way works great and delivers delicious results.
Step 1: Prepare the dough (Can be made ahead!)
In a bowl, mix together the flour, yeast and salt. Then add the olive oil and water, stirring with a spoon or fork until a dough begins to form.
Now, cover the dough and let it rise for about 20 minutes.
Step 2: Prepare to cook
Divide this dough into 8 pieces. Take two at a time and press them into a 4 ½ x 4 ½ inch square.
Flour a baking sheet and press a square of dough into the bottom of the sheet.
Step 3: Add the ingredients
Place 2 tablespoons of pizza sauce on top of the dough.
Add ¼ cup mozzarella cheese, ¼ diced bell pepper, 1 oz sliced olives, and 4 slices pepperoni.
Place another square of dough on top and press the edges to secure the pie. Close and lock the baking tray.
Step 4: Cook the Pizza
Place the baking sheet over the campfire or charcoal. Cook until the crust is golden brown, turning occasionally to ensure even cooking.
Carefully remove the baking sheet from the heat and unzip it. Pour the pizza bag onto a plate.
Tip: Cooking time depends on the temperature, but it usually takes 2–3 minutes.
Be careful with the baking sheet after cooking as it will be very hot and you will burn yourself. You can either wait for it to cool or be extra careful when making your next pizza.
Now you are ready to enjoy a warm, delicious meal straight from the campfire!
